A Winner is a Winner

Obviously, last week was a big one for the sporting world, with champions crowned in the NBA or NHL. Strangely, though, as the dust settles, there seems to be a lot of focus on team chemistry. Whereas the Penguins are commended for being a warm, loose, tightly knit unit, everyone says the Lakers are “fake,” distant from each other, almost forced together.

What’s so weird about all this discussion is that the Lakers won. It’s normal – valid, even – to question a team’s chemistry when it fails. If the guys fall flat on their face, let’s dig into their psyche, their locker-room dynamic, to see where it went wrong. But why is seemingly every sports pundit breaking down the Lakers?

So what – Kobe is an individual, he’s “selfish” as a player, he’s an outsider, he has very few friends, whatever – the bottom line is that the team won a championship. All that matters is the result on the playing surface; no matter how much the Lakers may or may not hate each other, as long as they can put aside their differences for an entire game, that’s all that matters.

Kobe and Shaq won three titles despite hating each other. The New York Rangers won a Stanley Cup with Mike Keenan, whom everyone supposedly hates, coaching. Look at the numbers Terrell Owens put up with Jeff Garcia and Donovan McNabb?

Find something else to do if you’re still gabbing about how “fake” the Lakers looked when they celebrated.
